Why would anyone want to run for elected office, let alone Congress? That's a big question that I've seriously thought about for a long time.
The majority of the public (64% as of 2/10/14) believe that the nation is headed in the wrong direction. That's Democrats, Republicans, Independents, and everyone. Pick your favorite target - President Obama, Congress, the Senate, either or both political parties; however you look at it the answer remains the same - Government is dysfunctional.
For the New York 22nd Congressional District there is an added level of disconnect. For months I've asked a simple question - "Who is the Representative in Congress?" Even during the 2012 election, and since, the most common answer is 'I don't know.' That's unacceptable.
Government has long been a growing pool of career politicians and millionaires (50.2% of Congress - 1/9/14). Does a millionaire politician understand the priorities of a family living check to check?
I think that needs to change.
Together, let's see if we can improve Congress and make Government about the people again - not just career politicians and millionaires.

"It is in vain to say that enlightened statesmen will be able to adjust these clashing interests, and render them all subservient to the public good. Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm. Nor, in many cases, can such an adjustment be made at all without taking into view indirect and remote considerations, which will rarely prevail over the immediate interest which one party may find in disregarding the rights of another or the good of the whole." - Federalist #10
